This wetland is situated in the south east of Melbourne and was designed to retain and treat storm water from a major industrial estate.
Australian Ecosystems propagated and established over 420,000 plants on this project for Melbourne Water.
The wetlands have now matured into a number of different wetland Ecological Vegetation Classes which include Wet Verge Sedgeland, Aquatic Herbland, Submerged Aquatic Herbland and Tall Marsh.
Collaboration between Australian Ecosystems ecologists and wetland design engineers early in the project allowed for modification of the design to promote enhanced habitat for birds.
The project has established well, and now provides habitat for a diversity of wetland EVC’s, and important habitat to a wide variety of wetland birds including international migratory species.
Significant numbers of Sharp Tailed Sandpipers has seen this site potentially qualifying for listing under the international RAMSAR convention, which is a clear indication of the benefits of collaboration of engineers and ecologists in the design process.
