The wetland within the Boardwalk Estate is highly diverse system, which contains a number of regional significant species. The presence of this diversity is due to a number of contributing factors including the design of the wetlands, the areas remnant seed bank and species planted by Australian Ecosystems.

Australian Ecosystems has endeavoured to replicate a number of threatened Ecological Vegetation Classes which include Lignum Swamp and Plains Grassy Wetland. Aside from these the wetlands also contains large areas of Wet Verge Sedgeland, Aquatic Herbland and Aquatic Sedgeland.

The function of the wetland is to provide storm water treatment, increase the natural amenity of the area and the creation of habitat.

As the area was formally a seasonal wetland the site contained a high diversity of natural regenerating species it required specialist skills when controlling the sites weeds.

The diversity of habitat types is utilised by a range of fauna species including Growling Grass Frogs, Painted Burrowing Frogs, Tiger Snakes, Black Falcon and a diversity of water birds.
