Balyang Sanctuary Geelong

[Previous Project] [Back to Projects] [Next Project]

balyang sanctuary

Balyang Sanctuary is a stormwater fed pond on adjacent to the Barwon River in Geelong with a residential catchment of 70 Ha. The key objectives behind the rehabilitation works undertaken in 2007 was to:

  1. Treat the stormwater inflow to best practice
  2. Improve the lake water quality
  3. Improve the lake biodiversity
  4. Reduce the risk of blue-green algal blooms.

98,000 wetland and terrestial plants have been planted so far around the lake fringe and within the wetland treatment ponds and earthern berms. The site has performed magnificently, with exceptional plant growth rates over the spring and summer period, clear healthy water, and an increase in bird life numbers and species that have returned to the sanctuary following the complete drying out of the site in 2006/07 drought.

Australian Ecosystems collected seed, supplied and planted the plants for the project in collaboration with the City of Greater Geelong.
