The Cape Paterson Ecovillage is a sustainable housing project located on the South Gippland coast within Bass Coast Shire. It promises to be the first genuine Ecovillage project in Victoria, and will set a new benchmark for sustainable development, ecological restoration and community development in a coastal area.

The Ecovillage project involves the following:

  • Ecological restoration of a cleared and degraded 40 hectare site with the replanting of around 1.4 million locally indigenous heathland, wetland and coastal plant species to restore valued habitat.
  • The establishment of community facilities (eg - lawn bowls club and community centre).
  • The establishment of extensive walking tracks, boardwalks, parks and around 200 dwellings built to environmentally sustainable construction
    principles.

The ecovillage will be a place where people can enjoy a strong sense of community, an active healthy lifestyle and contribute to the restoration and ecological values of the coast. It will link to the existing township and expand the range of recreational, habitat, park and community resources available in the town.

This project will set a new standard for sustainable living in Victoria and will compliment the village atmosphere of Cape Paterson.
